Mark Catesby ( English 1683-1749)

Catesby was an English naturalist who made two trips to the new world early in the 18th century and returned home to complete his “Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands”.  Published in 1731, it was the first natural history to describe and illustrate the flora and fauna of the southeastern part of Colonial America.  It is considered to be the most important colour plate book ever published on America.  Another naturalist saw a copy of this work and was inspired to do another publication on the birds of America.  This was John James Audubon who did his “Birds of America” with the birds painted full size.

Catesby’s work includes the birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and insects as well as many of the plants, trees, and flowers of the new world.

Our publication as Giclees of these great plates are done full size on the finest paper available printed with archival inks.
